The 20th Annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival: Chicago’s South Side Serenade Returns
When autumn arrives in Chicago, the air cools, the leaves begin to turn, and the South Side comes alive with the unmistakable sound of world-class jazz. This year is particularly special, as the Hyde Park Jazz Festival celebrates its monumental 20th anniversary. Scheduled for September 26–27, 2026, this two-day celebration will once again transform the historic Hyde Park neighbourhood into a sprawling, vibrant jazz lover’s paradise .
Whether you are a lifelong jazz aficionado or simply looking for a beautiful way to spend a fall weekend in Chicago, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival is a cultural cornerstone that should not be missed. Here is everything you need to know about attending, supporting, and celebrating this year’s historic milestone.
A Free Festival with a Priceless Legacy
In a city known for expensive summer music festivals, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival stands out for its radical accessibility: admission to the festival is completely free.
The festival is a collaborative platform dedicated to supporting the presentation and ongoing development of jazz, particularly on the South Side of Chicago . By keeping the event free, the organizers ensure that the rich tradition of Black American music remains accessible to the community where it has historically thrived.
While there is no ticket required to enter the festival grounds or venues, organizers ask all attendees to consider a $10 suggested donation. This small contribution is vital; it pays the artists, secures the venues, and ensures that the festival can remain free for everyone for years to come. You can make your donation online here.
World-Class Music Across Historic Venues
The Hyde Park Jazz Festival is not confined to a single park or stage. Instead, it is a true neighbourhood takeover. Performances are set against the backdrop of Hyde Park’s stunning architecture, utilizing a mix of outdoor stages, intimate indoor venues, and the iconic Midway Plaisance .
While the official 2026 lineup will be announced in June, attendees can expect a masterful blend of swing, bebop, avant-garde, and contemporary sounds . Past festivals have featured heavyweights like Jason Moran, Fay Victor, and the Ari Brown Quintet, alongside rising stars and local Chicago legends . Because some of the indoor venues have limited seating capacity, performances are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early for your favourite acts is highly recommended .
The 2026 Benefit Concert at the Obama Presidential Center
To kick off the 20th-anniversary season, the festival is hosting a highly anticipated Benefit and Concert on Monday, June 29, 2026. For the first time, this prestigious event will be held at the newly opened Obama Presidential Center (6001 S. Stony Island Ave), utilizing the Hadiya Pendleton Atrium and Elie Wiesel Auditorium .
The evening will feature a reception, a hosted beer and wine bar, catering by BAMJOY, and a headline performance by the acclaimed Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Quartet. Thurman, a powerhouse saxophonist and vocalist, made history as the first woman in 30 years to tour and perform full-time with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra .
The 2026 Benefit will also honour three pillars of the Chicago jazz community: the late, legendary pianist Willie Pickens, civic leader James Wagner, and the dedicated HPJF Volunteers who make the festival possible .
Proceeds from the benefit are the primary financial engine that keeps the September festival free for the public.
